Veneers – their various functions and visual appearance

Veneer has an age-old tradition. The Egyptians used to cut wood into fine strips, as they realised that this was a particularly economic way to use the valuable material. We here at Wonnemann also appreciate the various types of application for different kinds of veneer - peeled veneers make up the raw material for plywood and sliced veneers can create individual and decorative appearances for wooden surfaces.

Wonnemann obtains its peeled veneers for the production of plywood panels from sustainable forestry in Africa. These veneers are normally used in the manufacturing of plywood as the central layer, but they can also be used as top veneers. Wonnemann, with a storage of approximately 1 million square metres, specialises in European and American wood for its sliced veneers, such as beech, oak, ash, pine and maple.

If the intended purpose, dimensions, requirements and quality criteria have been ascertained from personal discussions with the customer,Wonnemann can recommend appropriate sliced veneer structures, veneer coverings and jointing methods. The qualitatively unique veneers are manually sorted according to their quality. Professionals apply veneer coverings (»quarter« or »crown«) from different sliced veneer structures or use different jointing methods in which they »book match«, »place in sequence« or »plank« the veneer. This allows the appearance of the wood to be created as requested by the customer.
